Printing your credit report can help you get approved quickly for rental applications. Finding a rental can be extremely competitive, so you should show up to property viewings prepared with the proper documents that a landlord may want to see. The three main documents you should have with you at viewings are:

  1. Your credit report

  2. Your reference letters (either personal, professional, or from past landlords)

  3. Your proof of employment letter

With Borrowell, you can quickly download and print an up-to-date copy of your Equifax credit report for free. Borrowell works directly with Equifax Canada to provide you with a verified and updated copy of your consumer credit report every single week.

Your printable credit report includes 5 main sections that show details about your personal information, credit information, and other information on your credit file. Here are the main sections included in your credit report:

  1. Personal Information: This section includes your full name, date of birth, and address.

  2. Credit Information: This section shows open or closed trades and credit accounts that appear on your credit file, including credit cards, loans, and mortgages.

  3. Public Records: This section includes bankruptcies, consumer proposals, judgments, and other public records.

  4. Collections: This section will show any credit accounts and outstanding balances that have been sent to a collection agency due to severe missed payments.

  5. Credit Inquiries: This section will show any credit inquiries (also known as credit checks) that have been generated on your file.

In general, most negative information is deleted from your file after 6 years from the date of last activity. This depends on the type of information included on your credit report. There are different items that you may see on your credit report, including late payments, collections, and bankruptcies. Each item comes with a different shelf life.

You can use Borrowell to safely download and print or email your Equifax credit report to your landlord. Borrowell works directly with Equifax Canada to provide verified credit reports to our members every single week.

Landlords look at credit reports evaluate whether a tenant can pay rent on time. If your current landlord needs to see an up-to-date credit report, or if a potential landlord wants to review your credit report before approving your rental application, you can log into your Borrowell account and easily download your credit report.

You don’t need to share your full credit report with potential employers. During the hiring process, employers may request to run a background check on you, which includes a credit check. When employers check your credit, they see a modified version of your credit report that provides a limited overview of your credit history. This modified report doesn’t include your credit score.

Some employers check an applicant’s credit history to review their financial management skills. Pre-employment credit checks are completely legal in Canada, but they require your written consent. If you’ve been asked to consent to a pre-employment credit check, you should know what your credit report looks like! This can help you anticipate any negative information that potential employers might find concerning about your credit history.

It’s a good idea to download and read your credit report before applying for a loan. Lenders review your credit before approving your loan application. Because of this, you should know what your credit report looks like! Reading your credit report will help you understand whether lenders think you are financially responsible.

Reviewing your credit report can also help you spot any red flags or errors. If you’ve found outdated information or errors on your report, you can dispute your credit report with Equifax. This involves providing an investigation request form and supporting documents to Equifax.

Downloading your PDF credit report with Borrowell does not hurt your credit score. Signing up for Borrowell and checking your own credit score or downloading your own credit report is considered a soft credit inquiry, which does not impact your credit score. If a lender or a vendor makes a request to check your credit score or pull your credit report, that’s considered a hard credit inquiry and will impact your credit score. These are the main differences between soft credit inquiries and hard credit inquiries.

There are some key differences between your credit report and your credit score. Your credit report is like your financial report card, and your credit score is like your final grade. Banks and lenders review your credit report when you apply for financial products.

Your credit report can also be pulled by car dealerships, insurers, cell phone companies, landlords, and future employers to determine your ability to manage debt and meet financial obligations.
